On Being in IT

Following the train of thought of my last post on the same topic, it occurred to me something that is obvious but peculiar.

We in the IT field are empowered with the possibility of innovating at a very low cost, and at a very fast pace. This has been true in the past decade, and the outlook is positive.

I am aware that innovating in large organizations is still a though endeavor, but try comparing it with, for instance, innovating a car factory, or innovating the cure for diabetes. Those innovations are very inexpensive and take decades of work.

IT innovation, however, is comically limited in breadth and reach. Regardless of what we tell each other, patting our own shoulders in our limited IT circles, we are not changing the world. Yes, we are allowing others to do something they couldn’t do before, or lowering costs of something they already did.

GitHub is cool and everything, but we are not changing the world.
Google Glass is cool, but is not changing the world. It is true, and we all know it. You know it.

It’s time we put our ego to one side and admit that we are not special.

Nice way to start the week… :)
